Smoking Fetish helps smokers kick their nicotine addiction,
providing tools, information and support for people trying to
quit smoking.
The biggest influence in drawing people
to smoke is the advertising of the tobacco industry. Young
people are the tobacco industry's biggest source of new customers.
They need to continually replace adults who have quit or died
because of their habit. The tobacco industry specifically
targets this young population and spends about $5 billion
per year on advertising. Only the auto industry spends more.
The
top three brands bought by underage smokers are exactly the
top 3 brands that spend the most on advertising: Marlboro,
Camel and Newport. Each brand provides an image such as ruggedness,
sex appeal, glamour or excitement for the young smokers to
portray to their peers. They see these ads everywhere: at
music concerts, sporting events, billboards and magazines.
Because of this visual assault by the tobacco industry, adolescents
consistently overestimate the number of smokers in the U.S.
Young smokers also smoke because it is easy to get cigarettes.
It all sounds quite sinister, especially considering the fact
that tobacco is a narcotic like cocaine and heroin – and we
have declared on open war on drugs. We need to recognize the
devastating effects that smoking is having on our society,
and on our young people.
What can you do to help? Before you can help anybody, you
must help yourself first if you're a cigarette smoker. You
need to overcome your addiction, and then you can look to help others
succeed.
